The unveiling of the lighting for the sandbag sculpture is Tuesday – InForum
FARGO — A community celebration is scheduled for Tuesday evening, May 31, at 9:30 p.m. to unveil the lighting of “The Spirit of the Sandbagger” sculpture in downtown Fargo.
Last September, the Fargo Lions Club donated the monument to the city in honor of the club’s 100th year of service to the community and to recognize the thousands of volunteers who battled the numerous Red River floods to save the community.
Over the past several months, a state-of-the-art lighting system has been purchased, designed, installed and programmed with the help of three companies at the Second Street and First Avenue North site.
One of the companies involved is Minneapolis’ Gopher Stage Lighting, which has worked to illuminate landmarks such as US Bank Stadium, Target Center, Fargo City Hall and the Fargodome.
The system includes nearly 100 different light shows and will add to the emerging riverside development.
Additionally, carvings were made on the arch’s support pillars to show the height of the five highest floods ever recorded in Fargo.
The Lions Club raised more than $200,000 to fund the art and lighting project.
Mayor Tim Mahoney and Lions Club President Joe Dobbs will be joined by others to speak at the ceremony.
The event will be recorded and broadcast on The City of Fargo TV 56 and streamed live on the city’s social media platforms.
