New Years Eve means fireworks, first night and fun • St Pete Catalyst
On New Years Eve, the town of St. Pete is ice skating under the stars at The Pier. The rink has been there since November 20, as part of the Winter Beach attraction, but it is a special âMidnight Skateâ event, with extended hours.
For the $ 17 admission, you get 75 minutes on the ice, skate rental included, from 11 a.m. on December 31 to 12:30 a.m. on January 1. Did Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson mean by the song “Skating Away on the Thin Ice?” of the New Day â?
The pier will detonate fireworks at 8 p.m., then at midnight.
Now in his 29e Year-round, First Night St. Pete is a series of family-friendly events that take place downtown on Friday nights, at 12 different venues. Admission is through the purchase of personalized “buttons” (available here).
For the first time, things include a special children’s entertainment area and a festival on the pier, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. boul. Bayshore for the everlasting first night favorite, the wrap wrap. The Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center is also involved.

Some highlights from the first night:
First United Methodist Church (1): Music (from 6:00 p.m.) includes Kasondra Rose, Nate Najar and Daniela Soledade and Jengle Slap.
Williams Park (2). art and science exhibition on the monarch butterfly; Underground circus; Cannonball cabaret.
United Methodist Church of Christ (3): St. Petersburg Opera Company at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Florida and Sarasota Orchestra at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Plaza Court (4). Dance the salsa.
South Straub Park (5): Urban Gypsies’ Barney leads a drum circle from 7 to 9 p.m. Art by Zulu Painter and Ryan Tuttle. South Straub is the location of the interactive art park for all ages.
Straub North Park (south of the Fine Arts Museum) (6): Illumination Station (illuminated local art for sale) until 11 p.m.
North Straub Park (north of the Fine Arts Museum) (7): Labyrinth (7 pm-11pm); Fire sculpture by James Oleson (11:30 p.m.).
North Straub Park (final scene) (8): Performances (from 6:45 pm): Dundu Dole Urban African Ballet; Jay Camara; Bus stop strip.
North Straub Park (Pavilion) (9): Bubbles for children, 7:45 p.m.); Silent disco, 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.).
Look for fireworks displays above Gulfport Beach (7 p.m.), 9 p.m. in Upham Beach (68th Street at Gulf Boulevard, St. Pete Beach), and Clearwater Beach at midnight.
