Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) plans to install a pillar with illusory three-dimensional metal sculptures of Mahatma Gandhi on one side and Dr. BR Ambedkar on the other. The nearly 16-foot-tall pillar, which will have a proper foundation six feet below, will also serve as a vertical garden with plants with a fully functioning drip irrigation system. Appropriate lighting arrangements will be made for clear visibility of the garden and the art of metal sculpture at night.
The pillar with an art replica the size of a bust of Dr BR Ambedkar on one side and Mahatma Gandhi on the other is likely to rise near the entrance to the Telugu Talli flyover towards the station. The artwork will be securely installed on polished granite using anchor bolts. The steel surface will be painted with multi-colored powder coated and rustproof materials. As Vizag is subject to frequent weathering, the pillar will be constructed to withstand strong winds.
GVMC officials said the company has launched bids for the construction of the pillar. The whole work, including the vertical garden, lighting and other related works, is expected to cost around Rs 14 lakh.
The vertical garden is a concept for converting dull and limited spaces in urban areas into green spaces and is a big hit in several metropolitan cities across the country. The metal sculpture will involve hundreds of different thin works of art. When assembled, they offer interesting details, representing the imagination of the artist.
Leading up to the city’s train station, the nearly 1.6 km long Telugu Talli Flyover, which was opened to the public in 2013, experiences a high volume of traffic during rush hour. However, apart from those going to or beyond the station, most mostly use the old roads under the flyover. All commercial structures and the city’s bus station are located under the flyover.
